A sweet stay with an unexpectedly sour ending.
Our week long stay was mostly enjoyable. We met the host, Herman, many times. He shared lots about himself and his creative endeavours. You will see a lot of H. as he is almost always around to work on his many projects. However, we were surprised by H. when just before check out he appeared saying we used too many sets of sheets. One set was meant for us, not three. I apologized for the mistake, while offering any plausible solution. H. did not wish for us to pay a fee, nor did he want help. He said one set is common knowledge and doesn’t want us to repeat the mistake. I explained the initial set was too warm, so we grabbed a light set instead. Herman already knew early that week my nieces had used another set for a sleepover. He said normally I should pay for their stay. Surprising, as H. never mentioned this. I offered to pay. It’s a reasonable request, although the loft was advertised for four, as costs for additional visitors are common on Airbnb. Unfortunately, H. continued to decline, reiterating not wanting us to treat the next person this way. He became increasingly stern as he continued, saying he is not a school master and that he therefore won’t be scolding me. He told me I was lucky the next visitors were arriving 24h later, not the same day. I mentioned the presence of several additional sets of fresh sheets in the bedroom, attempting to help. I tried to explain we cleaned the house thoroughly to make his day easier (this was not required or specified) and we understood and adhered fully to the house rules provided. (Surfaces were scrubbed, bathroom and kitchen, dusted, vacuumed and mopped). Before inspecting the loft, he said that level of cleaning was normal and to be expected. This notion is not common knowledge to me. I wanted to spare H. from such tedious work, aware of his distaste for domestic labour. (Earlier that week he said that he had been dreading cleaning up after the recently departed French family). In our case, I could have never imagined that laundry could cause such unpleasantness at the end of an otherwise enjoyable stay. It is unfortunate that none of the solutions we offered could soothe H.’s annoyance. He appeared instead to prefer a style of conversation, in which understanding and resolution had no place, creating an uncomfortably authoritative tone. Perhaps H. felt more comfortable expressing his true frustrations in his mother tongue, especially with a woman just half his age from whom he seemed to expect nothing but an exclusively ashamed and obedient response.

Great location for visiting Brussels, ghent and antwerp, lovely loft with comfy furnishings and plenty of equipment, outside space to eat outside, right next to the river supermarkets and train station just 20 minute on foot. and bus stops right outside property, Herman was a great host freindly and talented guy and available if needed, loved the pool table and bar area for you to use and the free use of the bikes for going for a ride along the cycle path which is directly 10 meters from the property along the river was a much welcomed bonus.
